Her husband had found out. He had taken one look at the baby she just pushed out of her womb and that was all it took for her to sign her death wish. If death tasted like a moment, she had a whole buffet of it placed in front of her.
Maka was trembling so hard that her teeth quaked and hot sweat spilled down the crown of her head. Her throat was dry and so raw that she believed she was bleeding inside from all the screaming she had done when birthing the child. As she struggled, like a wounded deer, to straighten her posture, her husband reached under their bed, and out came his most prized machete.
The man only used that beast, as she’d called it in her head and away from his curious unforgiving ears, after shooting wild game in the forest. She had watched, over the period of time they had been married, as he slit the throats of the wounded animals. She had
heard every last scream that tore out of their throats and as Dada stared at her, she
knew she would be hearing that haunting scream again.
Only, this time, the prey was no longer an animal, but the hunter remained unchanged. She was his prey, there was no denying and that came with a spine crumbling realization that her last scream was just around the corner, waiting to make its final debut.
Everything was a hazy blur through Maka’s teary eyes afterwards. He, with the speed of lightning, had struck her with the machete. There was blood on the floor. She was screaming. He was throwing curses at her like the remnants of the sugar cane that he discarded on the floor after chewing them every time the moon blessed them with its glorious light.
Mama realized a little bit late that she was leaning against the open window. Her screaming was going to end soon. She just didn’t know how. Or when…
Dada placed his hand on her soaked gown, right above her frantic heart. It was Maka’s favorite even though it had been soaked with the blood from her womb and the blood flowing incessantly from her chest.
And almost like Jack and Jill, who fell and stumbled down the hill, Maka fell to her death.
