Chapter 1: The Locket

There was a time when the gods walked among mortals.
On Thursday was a day like no other. I had just finished with my last writing project for the day when my four years old Nephew tumbled into my room, uninvited as usual. After the ritual of cleaning and trying to set to right his clothing. I noticed he was clutching something in his fist. Thinking of a way to pry the object from his precious hands, he can be tenacious when he's holding on to something or someone, his mom still smarts from his hair-pulling game... Anyways that's a story for another day. So I coerced him into my lap to show him a comic book I had gotten from ICM on my last shopping day. And sure enough before long his little fingers let go of the object. As it rolled to the floor, I saw it was a locket. It had an inscription - "To the King Woman who fought and won for her people". Curious by nature, I decided to seek my mother's opinion on the strange yet not so strange locket. Why did I choose to ask her? She had a wealth of knowledge of things, people and issues that may make King Solomon in the Holy Book seem like a novice.
Finding her tidying up her room, isn't this the room the maid just cleaned? Hmmm, mommy sef I thought. Her response when she saw the object on my hand was to smile and beckon me to sit beside her she said "so you have found it? I wondered how long it would take?"
"Mama, do you know who it belongs to?"
"Yes. It came among the things my aunt sent about a year ago. Have you seen her picture?"
Staring uncomprehending I let her take the locket. And sure enough, there was a little button on the side, a button so small that it takes an inquisitive eye to spot it. Soon I was staring at the picture of a woman with a slight smile painted on her lips yet it wasn't her smile that captured my attention. She had an aura of "conqueror" written in her eyes. I was held spellbound. Who was she? I didn't realise that I had spoken aloud until my mother answered
"She was a simple girl from Okwu-Esan. Her story began like this..."
